Reflection
In the past 4 weeks, I have completed four different tasks which focused on areas designed to explore the aspects of design and creativity. While completing these tasks, I learned different ways to document, research, compare and create, which allowed me to enjoy and elevate the learning process.
For example, when completing task one I needed to find and create a heart out of something new every day, I had already assumed that seven days of doing this wouldn’t impact my creativity and was defiantly proven wrong. During these seven days I found myself looking at things more and by things, I mean everything we have, use, touch, see, etc. when looking at these closer you really start to appreciate all the little necessities and anything around you. As I was looking to find heart shapes in everything I was doing, eating, and watching it started to become easier and I would catch myself thinking about what I was going to do the next day to create my heart.
Task two allowed to me have some fun and document something that was both simple and random. Initially, at the start of the task, I wouldn’t pay attention to the doors I was walking through and how many times I was walking through them and so I would have to retrace my steps. However, as I continued the task it got easier. Even to this day, I still catch myself doing this.
I can gather from these two tasks that creativity is the ability to generate original and innovative ideas. Using your imagination, stepping out of your comfort zone, and risk-taking are essential in order to produce the right product.
Moving on to the other tasks I found that world views were very informative and learned new things which I didn’t know before. I also found myself imagining what type of worldview I have and the type of designer I would want to be, along with the different things I would design. I gathered and know that I prefer the phenomenological views the western world lacks and will face problems in the future. As rationalist buildings don’t allow people to feel connected and be own with their environment which is so important to homes as we want to feel at home and be able to express our feelings in a place that we love. Though it also made me question if I was to be raised with a different worldview, would my life be different? The critical thinking task allowed me to completely analyze and pinpoint certain aspects of the design using my creativity to think about how I could turn it into my own design and what I would do differently. It made me realise how important critical thinking is and thinking about the different aesthetics, concepts, and contexts and how well they fulfill their purpose and I will be able to keep this skill with me for future projects and ideas.
Overall, designing this portfolio and the process and experience that came with it, taught me that I can be more creative than I think and to use and practice my creativity every day as it will benefit me and everyone that surrounds me. This was a refreshing assignment and allowed us to really capture to step out of our comfort zones to create, design and think about new things.
